Tommy Paul staged a remarkable comeback to advance to the Hamburg Open final by defeating Australia’s Alex de Minaur 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinal. Initially trailing after losing the first set and falling behind 3-0 in the second, Paul turned the match around by winning nine consecutive games, ultimately dominating the final set. This victory marked Paul’s 10th ATP Tour-level final and his second on clay this season, following his recent title in Houston.
Despite Alex de Minaur saving 13 out of 17 break points, he struggled with his second serve, winning only 44 percent of those points as Tommy Paul gradually wore him down from the baseline. Paul is now set to face qualifier Ignacio Buse in the final, who secured his spot with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 win over Aleksandar Kovacevic. Buse’s performance marks him as the first Peruvian man to reach an ATP Tour-level final since 2007.
In another event, at the Geneva Open in Switzerland, American youngster Learner Tien clinched a spot in his first clay-court final by defeating Alexander Bublik 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(5). Despite a strong start with a 6-1 lead in the deciding set tiebreak, Tien faced nerves and missed four match points before eventually securing victory on his fifth opportunity. Tien, at 20 years old, became the youngest Geneva finalist since 1990 and the first American man to reach a final there since 1984.
Learner Tien will now face Argentina’s Mariano Navone in the Geneva Open final, after Navone upset three-time champion Casper Ruud 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinal. Navone’s strong performance included hitting 27 winners and making fewer unforced errors than Ruud. The final winner will claim their second ATP Tour-level title.
