Huge crowds of tourists flocked to Angkor Wat temple in northwest Cambodia on Sunday to witness the breathtaking sunrise during the spring equinox. Tourism Minister Huot Hak mentioned that both national and international tourists came together to capture memorable photos of the sunrise aligning with the central tower of Angkor Wat. The APSARA National Authority (ANA) stated that the Angkor equinoxes occur twice a year, with the Vernal Equinox between March 21 and 23 and the Autumnal Equinox between September 21 and 23.
The ANA described the Angkor equinox as a unique event where the sun rises above the central tower of Angkor Wat, showcasing a spectacular sight left by the Khmer ancestors. This event offers insights into both faith and science. Angkor Wat, situated in the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park, is a significant temple complex housing 91 ancient temples constructed between the ninth and 13th centuries. The Angkor Archaeological Park, covering 401 square kilometers, is a popular tourist spot in Cambodia, attracting 955,131 international tourists in 2025 and generating $44.7 million in revenue from ticket sales.
