A sudden influx of tourists to Thalakundha, near Udhagamandalam Taluk, to witness ground frost has led the Forest Department to limit public access. The surge in visitors was triggered by viral social media posts showcasing the frost-covered landscape, raising concerns about safety and ecological impact in the Nilgiris.
Tourism activity in Thalakundha and its vicinity spiked as people were attracted to the rare winter phenomenon. However, many tourists were observed straying off designated paths and entering forest areas under the department’s jurisdiction. Thalakundha is a crucial part of the Kamaraj Sagar Dam catchment, known for its ecological sensitivity and potential hazards.
Officials emphasized the risks posed by the sudden rise in tourists, not only to visitors but also to the wildlife in the region. The Forest Department issued warnings against unauthorized entry into the area, highlighting the uneven terrain and the presence of deep water bodies that could be perilous, especially during frosty conditions.
The department has taken measures to address the situation, including deploying personnel to monitor and prevent tourists from accessing restricted zones. Warning boards have been strategically placed to alert visitors about the dangers and restrictions in place. Until safety concerns are mitigated and the tourist influx subsides, these restrictions will remain enforced.
