Talapatra artist Soumyaranjan Das believes that traditional art forms are finally getting the global recognition they deserve, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this shift. Das emphasized that PM Modi’s gifting of traditional handicrafts is not merely a strategy but a means for artisans to showcase and expand their work. Reflecting on PM Modi’s gesture of presenting Indian gifts to foreign leaders, Das highlighted the growing international attention towards Odisha’s palm leaf engraving art.
PM Modi recently presented specially curated Indian gifts to Norwegian dignitaries, showcasing India’s rich artistic traditions, sustainable craftsmanship, and cultural heritage. Queen Sonja received a Palm Leaf Pattachitra artwork, known as Tala Pattachitra, representing one of Odisha’s ancient and intricate artistic traditions. This art form involves engraving detailed illustrations onto specially-treated palm leaves from the Palmyra tree, showcasing exceptional precision and blending storytelling, calligraphy, and classical iconography.
The promotion of Odisha’s traditional palm leaf art has provided new opportunities for craftsmen, enhancing global appreciation for this art form in recent years. Das expressed gratitude for the increased positive responses worldwide, attributing PM Modi as a catalyst for showcasing Odisha’s culture and traditional art forms on the global stage. The intricate craft involves engraving stories from epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana on palm leaves with detailed illustrations and descriptions in Hindi, English, and Sanskrit.
Das emphasized the desire for global promotion and recognition of this art form, aligning with the “Vocal for Local” vision. He noted that local handicrafts and folk art have gained renewed identity and stronger promotion under PM Modi’s leadership, earning artisans international recognition and respect.
