A devastating fire broke out at the Lemon Green Restaurant building in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, leading to a tragic loss of 21 lives. The fire, which quickly spread through the five-storey structure, posed significant challenges for rescue operations due to limited exits and sealed surroundings.
Delhi Fire Services received the first alert about the fire around 8:50 a.m., triggering a swift response with multiple firefighting units dispatched to the scene. Despite the difficult conditions, rescue teams managed to save 37 individuals trapped inside the building, transferring them to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The intense blaze resulted in 18 fatalities among the 38 individuals admitted to Max Hospital, with 20 others sustaining injuries. Additionally, AIIMS reported three casualties out of the 13 patients brought in for medical care. The building’s design, with only one staircase and a lift, exacerbated the situation, hindering escape efforts.
The structure’s layout facilitated the rapid spread of smoke and heat across floors, complicating the rescue mission and trapping occupants. Fire officials continued search operations until they confirmed the evacuation of all individuals from the premises. The cause of the fire will now undergo a thorough investigation by the Delhi Police.
Authorities revealed that the building housed around 22 accommodation rooms and two storage rooms on the terrace. Following the tragic incident, Minister Ashish Sood of the Delhi government visited the site, instructing officials to inspect similar establishments in the city for compliance with safety regulations.
