In a distressing incident in Keonjhar district, a tribal man named Jitu Munda unearthed his sister’s skeletal remains and transported them to a bank to withdraw Rs 19,300 from her account. Manas Ranjan Mangaraj, a leader of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) parliamentary party, has called on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to implement immediate changes in rural banking practices. Mangaraj highlighted the challenges faced by marginalized individuals in dealing with formal banking systems, emphasizing the need for compassionate reforms.

The incident has shed light on the struggles of vulnerable groups like tribals, widows, and senior citizens when navigating banking procedures. Despite government initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and digital banking access, the gap between policy and ground reality remains evident. Mangaraj stressed the necessity for simplified claim processes, field verification systems, and enhanced accountability for bank officials handling sensitive cases. He urged for urgent action to prevent such distressing situations and ensure easier access to savings for all citizens.

Mangaraj’s plea to Sitharaman underscores the urgent requirement for reforms to assist those lacking literacy and legal awareness in accessing financial services. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the need for a more humane and supportive banking system, especially for those in remote areas facing significant challenges.
