Both the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have criticized Sumit Roy, the missing executive assistant of Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee, for alleged corruption and other wrongdoings. The West Bengal Police conducted searches at various locations connected to Roy, including his residences in Kolkata and Hooghly district, as well as his in-laws’ house, but he could not be found.
Trinamool MLA Kunal Ghosh expressed that Sumit Roy had established himself as a “separate power center” with his own group and influence. Ghosh suggested that the police should have detained all individuals associated with Roy from his residence.
Union Minister of State and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar claimed that Sumit Roy wielded significant influence in political and administrative matters, including decisions on police transfers and postings. He insinuated that Roy might have engaged in illicit activities in Shalboni, leading to the registration of an FIR against him.
Suspended Trinamool leader Riju Dutta revealed the filing of an FIR at Bishnupur Police Station related to an alleged Rs 250 crore corruption case linked to Cyclone Amphan relief work, implicating Abhishek Banerjee. Dutta emphasized that if Banerjee is innocent, it will be proven in court.
BJP leader Abhijit Das accused Abhishek Banerjee of being a “leader of terrorists” and alleged misuse of funds allocated during the Amphan cyclone in 2020. Das criticized the lack of panchayat elections in the past decade and claimed that opposition candidates were unable to participate due to alleged atrocities during the 2018 elections.
