Just two days before the re-election in Falta Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district, Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan announced that he will not contest the election. Despite this, his name will still appear on the ballot as a Trinamool Congress candidate. The Chief Electoral Officer’s office clarified that the re-election will proceed as scheduled with the same candidates.
Jahangir Khan’s decision to withdraw from the election came after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a special development package for Falta. Although the nomination withdrawal deadline has passed, Jahangir’s name will remain on the EVM. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Adhikari conducted a ‘road show’ in Falta, leading to celebrations among BJP supporters after Jahangir’s announcement.
Jahangir emphasized his commitment to Falta’s development and peace, expressing his support for the Chief Minister’s initiatives. Despite facing questions and seeking protection against arrest, Jahangir stood by his decision to withdraw from the re-election for the constituency. The Trinamool Congress clarified that Jahangir’s choice was personal and not directed by the party.
The Trinamool Congress denounced the pressure faced by its workers in Falta, highlighting arrests and intimidation by the BJP. Despite challenges, the party vowed to continue its fight against the BJP in West Bengal and Delhi. The withdrawal of Jahangir Khan from the re-poll was described as a result of external pressures, with the party expressing solidarity with its workers in the face of adversity.
