A day before West Bengal’s second phase of Assembly elections, Trinamool Congress has once again gone to the Calcutta High Court regarding the preventive arrests carried out in the state from April 26 to April 27. The Chief Electoral Officer’s office in West Bengal reported 1,095 preventive arrests in the last 24 hours and 1,583 in the last 36 hours.
Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member Kalyan Banerjee approached the Calcutta High Court, claiming that around 350 arrests were in violation of a previous court order against indiscriminate preventive arrests. Banerjee’s petition has been accepted, and a hearing is expected later on Tuesday.
The Calcutta High Court’s earlier order on April 22 emphasized that arrests should be made in accordance with the law and not by labeling individuals as potential troublemakers. The highest number of preventive arrests from April 26 to April 27 were in East Burdwan district, followed by North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Kolkata (Uttar), Hooghly, Nadia, and Howrah.
Among the arrests, Narugopal Bhakat, a Trinamool Congress Councillor, was detained in East Burdwan. Additionally, four individuals were arrested in connection with a clash between BJP and Trinamool Congress members in North 24 Parganas.
