A Trinamool Congress councillor from Dhuliyan municipality in Murshidabad district has been apprehended on charges of corruption amounting to lakhs of rupees in the PM Awas Yojana. The councillor is accused of taking money from individuals, promising them homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, but allegedly failing to deliver on those promises.
The arrested individual, Sarif Sheikh alias Haddi, was taken into custody on Saturday morning after a complaint was lodged at Shamsherganj Police Station. Sarif Sheikh, also known as Haddi, serves as a Trinamool Congress councillor for ward number 15 of Dhuliyan Municipality. Law enforcement officials conducted a raid at his residence around 1 am to investigate the allegations, leading to his arrest later that morning.
According to police sources, the accused is suspected of extorting significant amounts of money from beneficiaries in increments of Rs 20,000 or Rs 30,000. Additionally, he is accused of misappropriating substantial funds from the housing initiative.
