The Regent Park Police Station in Kolkata apprehended Biswajit Mondal, a Trinamool Congress Councillor from Ward No. 114 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, on Thursday. Mondal’s arrest is linked to a 2024 incident in Regent Park involving the harassment and assault of a woman. This arrest marks the fourth Trinamool Councillor from KMC detained in the past three days on various charges, predominantly corruption and extortion.
According to city police insiders, the victim accused Mondal, a three-time Councillor, of molesting and sexually harassing her on two occasions – first in March 2024 and then on May 9 of this year. She further alleged that Mondal used obscene language and threats against her. The woman claimed that despite reporting the initial assault to the police, no action was taken due to Mondal’s political affiliation.
The victim approached the Regent Park Police Station again last month after Mondal repeated the offense. Subsequently, her complaint was lodged, an investigation was launched, and Mondal was arrested on Thursday morning. Over the past three days, a total of four Trinamool Congress Councillors from KMC have been arrested on charges including corruption and extortion.
In a separate development, former Minister Firhad Hakim resigned as the Mayor of KMC on Wednesday, following approval from party leader Mamata Banerjee. Trinamool Congress sources confirmed Hakim’s resignation after he attended an administrative meeting at the state secretariat Nabanna.
