The majority faction of the Trinamool Congress’ Legislative Party in the West Bengal Assembly, led by expelled member Ritabrata Banerjee, stated before the Election Commission of India that their numerical strength validates their right to the party’s name and symbol. A delegation of rebel legislators, including Banerjee, emphasized their dominance during a meeting with the Election Commission. They highlighted the significant support from party MLAs, former ministers, councillors, and Zilla Parishad members.
Ritabrata Banerjee pointed out that more than two-thirds of the party MLAs in West Bengal are aligned with their faction. He mentioned the backing of former ministers, councillors from various municipal bodies, and Zilla Parishad members across districts. Banerjee emphasized that their substantial support base negates the necessity to separately demand the party name and symbol rights. The faction also informed the Commission about a recent convention where new party leadership was appointed.
During the meeting with the Election Commission, Banerjee and his team presented their arguments, emphasizing their claim over the party’s name and symbol. The Commission assured them of a thorough review of the matter. However, another party legislator, Kunal Ghosh, representing the “minority” faction loyal to Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, criticized the rebel camp’s assertions. Ghosh highlighted the significance of Mamata Banerjee’s leadership within the Trinamool Congress, stating that the party’s essence lies with her and her supporters.
