A group of 10 legislators from the faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee in the Trinamool Congress will visit the Election Commission of India in New Delhi to assert their claim to the party’s logo and funds. The rebel faction had requested a meeting with the Commission, which has now been scheduled for Thursday. The legislators are set to depart for New Delhi on Wednesday for the meeting.
On June 22, the rebel group established a new National Working Committee with 30 members and a sub-committee of 10 members. Notably, the former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was replaced as the party’s national chairperson by veteran legislator Arup Roy. Legal representatives have already submitted all necessary documents to the Election Commission on behalf of the rebel Trinamool Congress.
The conflict revolves around control of the party’s name and election symbol, as per the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order of 1968. The rebel camp claims to have over 60 supporting MLAs, ensuring they meet the required criteria for retaining the symbol. In contrast, the opposing faction reportedly has only 20 MLAs, falling short of the necessary threshold.
