Calcutta High Court has granted conditional anticipatory bail to Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal in a financial fraud case. Mondal, the Birbhum district president of a faction of Trinamool Congress, had applied for bail after his earlier attempt was rejected in a lower court. The High Court noted that the case was filed based on an old complaint and decided that custodial interrogation was unnecessary.

Mondal’s lawyer argued that the incident in question occurred in 2021, while the FIR was lodged in 2026, suggesting political motives behind the case. The court directed Mondal to cooperate with the investigation, requiring him to meet with the investigating officer within 10 days and be available for questioning as needed. The case was filed by a Bolpur resident against Mondal and other Trinamool members, alleging financial fraud and non-payment of around Rs 30 lakh.

Subhendu Mandal, the complainant, claimed that he was targeted due to his support for the BJP and faced harassment. Despite his initial complaint not resulting in action, he renewed his plea after the change in government. The court’s decision on the anticipatory bail application allows Mondal to avoid immediate arrest while the investigation proceeds.
