A police complaint has been lodged at Sankrail Police Station in Kolkata’s Howrah district against Priya Paul, the Trinamool Congress MLA from Sankrail Assembly constituency. The complaint accuses her of hiding assets and properties under her husband’s name in the election affidavit for the recent state elections. The complaint, filed by a local Bharatiya Janata Party activist, alleges that Priya Paul amassed significant wealth through unfair means since becoming an MLA in 2021.
The complaint further claims that Priya Paul did not disclose assets and properties registered under her husband and daughter’s names in the election affidavit for the West Bengal assembly polls in 2026. Despite these allegations, Priya Paul secured re-election from Sankrail, defeating the BJP candidate by a substantial margin of over 16,000 votes. The complainant emphasized that the MLA and her husband, who came from modest financial backgrounds, witnessed a significant surge in their family’s assets over the past five years, which were not declared in the election affidavit.
The complainant expressed concern over the exponential increase in the movable and immovable properties of Priya Paul’s family during her tenure. The police have been urged to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. As of now, there has been no response from Priya Paul or any of her family members. Additionally, there has been no reaction from either faction of the Trinamool Congress, one supporting Mamata Banerjee and the other led by expelled party legislator Ritabrata Banerjee.
