A day after Trinamool Congress faced defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra expressed that the party had put up a strong fight despite challenging circumstances. She acknowledged the public’s choice of the BJP to lead the state government.
Moitra emphasized the supremacy of the people’s will, stating that if Bengal favored the BJP, the party respects that decision. She praised her party’s efforts in battling against significant odds and uneven conditions. Moitra reiterated her commitment to upholding a secular nation governed by the constitution rather than majoritarianism.
In the election results, the BJP emerged victorious with a substantial two-thirds majority, marking the end of Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in West Bengal. The majority mark in the 294-member Assembly stands at 196, with the BJP securing 206 seats and the Trinamool Congress attaining 81 seats. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost her Bhabanipur seat to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by a significant margin.
Results for 293 constituencies have been declared, with repolling scheduled for the Falta seat in South 24 Parganas district on May 21. The BJP garnered 46% of the vote share, surpassing the Trinamool Congress, which secured 41%. Other parties like the Congress, CPI(M), AISF, and AJUP also won seats in the elections.
