Trinamool Congress has unveiled its choices for the vacant Rajya Sabha seats in West Bengal, introducing unexpected candidates. Among them is Rajeev Kumar, the recently retired acting director general of police in West Bengal. Another surprising pick is Babul Supriyo, the current West Bengal information technology minister, a singer-actor turned politician, and a former BJP member. The list also includes Menaka Guruswamy, a senior advocate of the Supreme Court known for representing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in legal matters.
The fourth candidate nominated by Trinamool Congress for the Upper House in West Bengal is the renowned Bengali actress Koel Mallick. The party expressed its pleasure in announcing the candidature of Babul Supriyo, Rajeev Kumar, Menaka Guruswamy, and Koel Mallick for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. Trinamool Congress is expected to secure four out of the five Rajya Sabha seats in West Bengal, leaving one for the BJP based on the parties’ strength in the state Assembly.
With three seats set to be vacated by current Trinamool members and one by Mausam Benazir Noor who recently joined the Congress, Trinamool Congress is poised to comfortably win these four seats. The BJP is likely to secure the seat held by CPI-M’s Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya, given the party’s lack of representation in the Assembly. The BJP’s candidate for the remaining Rajya Sabha seat from West Bengal is yet to be revealed.
