Trinamool Congress has written to the Kolkata Police, requesting approval for its traditional July 21 Martyrs’ Day rally at Esplanade in central Kolkata. The party aims to hold the event in front of Victoria House, continuing a two-decade-long tradition. Following recent political shifts in the state, a faction of Trinamool MLAs has sided with Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, while some loyalists of Mamata Banerjee have formed a separate working committee.
Mamata Banerjee, addressing party members, emphasized the historical significance of the Martyrs’ commemoration at Esplanade and expressed determination to proceed with the event if granted police clearance. Despite the reduced number of supporters, she affirmed her intention to attend the rally. Banerjee urged sensible individuals to rejoin the party, cautioning against betrayal for personal gain. Speculation suggests that Banerjee views the upcoming rally as crucial for the party’s organizational stability, awaiting the police’s decision on the event.
