Amid a joint protest and walkout by the Opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Congress, the Tripura Legislative Assembly approved a Bill to establish another private university in the state. The Dhanvantari Skill University, Tripura Bill was passed despite objections from Opposition members who criticized the proposing organization for lacking necessary experience and institutional strength.
The New Delhi-based NVK Skill Foundation Trust is behind the proposal to create a knowledge-driven and technologically-enabled Dhanvantari Skill University in Agartala. Leader of the Opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury, and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman raised concerns about the organization’s lack of experience in managing higher educational institutions.
Opposition leader Chaudhury pointed out flaws in the Bill and cautioned that such private universities could negatively impact students’ futures in the state. He urged the government to be more vigilant in allowing private entities to establish higher education institutions to avoid jeopardizing young people’s prospects.
