Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha declared that the state government has met its goal of doubling farmers’ income. He stated that farmers’ average monthly earnings have risen from about Rs 6,000 in 2015-16 to over Rs 13,000 due to sustained policy measures and agricultural reforms. The Chief Minister made these remarks during the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ event in West Tripura district.
Saha emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting cultivable land and ensuring sustainable farming practices. He highlighted that the government has successfully doubled farmers’ income as targeted. Saha also clarified that the government is dedicated to preventing the indiscriminate conversion of agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of striking a balance between industrial development and safeguarding agricultural land. He mentioned that industrial projects should ideally utilize unused land in designated industrial zones rather than fertile agricultural land. Saha underscored that all proposals involving land use would be closely monitored to safeguard farmers’ interests and the agriculture sector.
The ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ is a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting sustainable farming and preserving soil health. Saha expressed support for the campaign, initiated by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). He highlighted the campaign’s significance in addressing concerns over soil fertility decline and the excessive use of chemical fertilizers.
