A lower court in Tripura has issued a notice to Abhishek Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha member, who is currently in New Delhi. The notice stems from a complaint filed at the Khowai police station in Tripura following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. Abhishek Banerjee, who is the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has been summoned to appear in person at the Khowai district court on June 22.
This notice for appearance was not sent via Speed Post but was routed through a lower court in Alipore, Kolkata. The court in Kolkata appointed a Bailiff for this purpose. According to regulations, such summons should be delivered to the individual through the local police station. The Bailiff, appointed by the Alipore court, initially delivered the summons to the Kalighat Police Station, which covers the residence of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee.
Subsequently, a messenger from the Kalighat Police Station delivered the summons to the address specified by the Khowai district court in Tripura. The address, 30B Harish Chatterjee Street, serves as the official residence of Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool office. The messenger reached the address before Mamata Banerjee returned to Kolkata from New Delhi.
The summons on behalf of Abhishek Banerjee was accepted by Kunal Ghosh, a Trinamool legislator and the party’s state spokesman in West Bengal. However, Ghosh declined to provide any comments on this issue to the media.
Incidentally, both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee had traveled to New Delhi to participate in a crucial meeting of the opposition Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc scheduled for June 8. While Mamata Banerjee held a one-on-one meeting with Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on June 9, Abhishek Banerjee met with the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. Although Mamata Banerjee has returned to Kolkata, her nephew remains in New Delhi.
