The Tripura Legislative Assembly will convene a one-day session on April 30 to discuss strengthening women’s constitutional rights, focusing on the 131st Amendment Bill, also known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. The session was called after a petition from 17 Assembly members, including government Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy, was received by Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia. The petition aims to garner nationwide support for amending the Constitution to ensure one-third reservation of seats for women in Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath disclosed that the proposal urges the Central government to kickstart the delimitation process based on the 2011 Census. The Assembly members’ initiative led to the session’s scheduling on April 30, emphasizing the significance of the issue. The House will appeal to all political parties, through the Central government, to reintroduce and pass the matter in Parliament after adopting the motion.
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury and Congress Member of Legislative Assembly Gopal Roy, among others, participated in the Business Advisory Committee meeting chaired by the Assembly Speaker. The session will include obituary references for former Minister Kartik Kannya Debbarma and legendary singer Asha Bhosle. The Business Advisory Committee report will precede discussions on the main agenda, with a focus on the women’s reservation issue.
