Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath revealed a plan to provide rooftop solar panels for just Rs 1,000 to consumers using less than 50 units of electricity. This initiative targets 1.5 lakh families, with 17,000 people already registered and 3,500 families having installed solar systems. The PM Surya Ghar scheme offers subsidies ranging from Rs 33,000 to Rs 85,800 for different capacities.
The state government aims to generate 150 megawatts of electricity through this scheme, with 11 megawatts already being produced. Beneficiaries will receive solar systems worth Rs 66,000 by paying only Rs 1,000. Training programs by GIZ and the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited are equipping officials and engineers for the maintenance of these systems.
Germany-based organization GIZ, in partnership with Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited, is training officials, engineers, and vendors on rooftop solar system maintenance. Two handbooks in English and Bengali have been published to aid consumers and stakeholders. Consumers are now not just paying bills but also earning money by supplying power through these solar systems.
