In a thrilling match on Matchday 7 of the Global Chess League (GCL), Marc’andria Maurizzi of Triveni Continental Kings secured a crucial win over Volodar Murzin from Fyers Amerian Gambits on the prodigy board, leading his team to an 8-7 victory. This win helped the defending champions maintain their position at the top of the leaderboard. The American Gambits had earlier dominated the day by defeating Mumba Masters 16-1 in their first match and taking a 7-4 lead against the Continental Kings. However, Maurizzi’s victory over Murzin with black pieces turned the tide in favor of the Continental Kings, earning them four game points and securing the win. Maurizzi was also awarded the Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.
Meanwhile, Mumba Masters faced a setback in their quest for a final spot after being defeated by the American Gambits in a reverse fixture. Vladislav Artemiev started the winning streak for the American Gambits by defeating Wesley So, followed by Hikaru Nakamura’s victory over Maxime Vachier-Lagrave on the icon board. Richard Rapport sealed the victory for the American Gambits by defeating Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Bardiya Daneshwar was the only player from Mumba Masters to earn a point after drawing with Volodar Murzin.
The slip-up by the second-placed Mumba Masters opened up opportunities for other teams, with Ganges Grandmasters narrowing the gap with a 10-9 win over Alpine SG Pipers. Vincent Keymer and Javokhir Sindarov’s victories put the Grandmasters in a commanding position, but Hou Yifan and Leon Luke Mendonca’s wins for the Pipers kept them in the game. The match on the icon board between Viswanathan Anand and Fabiano Caruana proved crucial in deciding the outcome, with Anand managing to secure a draw in 39 moves, earning three match points for the team and bringing their tally to 12.
