President Donald Trump revealed that four privately funded advanced reactors have achieved significant milestones under a program supported by the administration to expedite nuclear innovation. Trump, speaking at the White House with senior officials and executives from nuclear technology firms, emphasized that this progress signifies a new chapter for the US nuclear sector after a prolonged period of decline. He highlighted the administration’s success in surpassing its goal, set through executive orders, to revitalize the country’s civilian nuclear industry.

The President praised the advancements, stating that the US had not seen privately funded advanced reactors operational for over four decades. He criticized the previous regulatory processes that hindered nuclear development, noting the lengthy approval timelines for reactor designs. The Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, Michael Kratsios, commended the achievement, underscoring America’s reemergence as a global leader in both traditional and advanced nuclear technologies.

Executives from companies involved in the program attributed the accelerated development to the administration’s directives. One company representative mentioned plans to deploy reactors at military installations and for future space missions, highlighting the potential for powering high-tech assets in space and undersea operations. Another executive emphasized the shift towards production over presentations, acknowledging the administration’s role in this transformation. The executives expressed optimism about the future of nuclear energy, with one describing the moment as historic.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright highlighted the transformative impact of the administration’s energy strategy, citing the country’s improved energy position. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum emphasized the significance of nuclear power in the administration’s energy agenda, attributing the industry’s revival to private investments rather than government subsidies. The United States, known for pioneering commercial nuclear technology in the 1950s, faced challenges in new reactor development due to construction costs, licensing procedures, and public opposition, while countries like Russia and China expanded their nuclear industries domestically and internationally.
