Trump Celebrates Drop in Crime Rates in Memphis, Touts Law-and-Order Approach

President Donald Trump visited Memphis to commend a significant decrease in violent crime, showcasing it as a success of his law-and-order strategy. Trump highlighted a remarkable decline in criminal activities, including a 60% drop in robberies, a 74% decrease in carjackings and motor vehicle thefts, and a 70% reduction in murders from their peak. The task force, initiated in September 2025 and inspired by a similar program in Washington, united federal, state, and local agencies along with the National Guard.

US Marshals Service Director Gady Serralta reported over 7,342 arrests in slightly over six months, encompassing 44 homicide cases, 812 drug offenses, and 757 gang-related crimes. The operation also resulted in the seizure of more than 1,200 illegal firearms and the safe return of 150 missing children. Serralta noted a 43% decrease in total serious crimes, a 37% drop in murders, a 40% decline in sexual assaults, a 56% reduction in robberies, and a 68% fall in motor vehicle thefts.

Attorney General Pam Bondi praised the collaborative efforts across agencies, emphasizing the community’s preference for law and order. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee acknowledged the visible positive changes, terming them as “generational change.” Trump additionally declared that National Guard members involved in the Memphis task force and other missions would receive benefits akin to active-duty troops.

Various officials positioned Memphis as part of a broader national strategy. FBI Director Kash Patel highlighted the record levels of apprehending criminals, while ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons mentioned the arrest of 619 undocumented immigrants, clarifying that it was not an immigration-focused operation. The event also carried political undertones, with Trump criticizing Democrats for airport disruptions and advocating for voter identification and citizenship proof measures in deals.

Before addressing domestic matters, Trump disclosed a temporary halt in planned US strikes on Iranian energy targets following diplomatic talks with Tehran. Local individuals at the event shared personal experiences of crime impact and the recent positive transformations. Business owner Tim Pugh lamented the impact of thefts on his business, while resident Dalisia Ballinger expressed relief after the crackdown, describing the past six months as a transformative period.

Memphis has grappled with high crime rates for long, reflecting the broader concern for public safety in the US. Trump’s administration has prioritized crime reduction, border security, and police support as key policy areas.
