US President Donald Trump criticized NATO allies for not backing the US strikes against Iran during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Taoiseach Micheal Martin. Trump stated that the US did not need allied support for the operation, questioning NATO’s response.
While NATO allies agreed in principle with the action, they did not contribute, leading Trump to call them “foolish.” He emphasized that the US operation significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities, including its navy and air force.
Trump highlighted the objective of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, stating that Iran was a significant threat. He also acknowledged the support from Middle Eastern partners like Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Israel.
Regarding Ukraine, Trump raised concerns about US spending and allied contributions, mentioning the significant financial support provided. He also mentioned rescheduling a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and considering further actions towards Cuba.
The meeting underscored differences between the US and European leaders on Iran and NATO, despite both sides emphasizing the importance of the transatlantic partnership.
