US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about peace negotiations in Ukraine, stating they were nearing a resolution following a productive meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. Trump highlighted significant progress made in discussions, emphasizing the importance of ending the ongoing conflict. He also mentioned reaching out to European leaders, including those from France, Finland, Poland, Norway, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Negotiations between the two leaders covered a wide range of issues crucial for resolving the conflict, with Trump acknowledging substantial advancements while noting the presence of a few remaining challenging matters. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude towards Trump and his team for their continuous engagement in the peace talks, underscoring achievements across various areas. Security guarantees were identified as a pivotal aspect of the discussions, with both sides recognizing their significance in achieving lasting peace.

While progress was reported on security guarantees and military elements of the plan, Trump cautioned that unresolved territorial issues, particularly concerning the Donbas region, posed complexities. Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to legal frameworks and public consensus, emphasizing the need for parliamentary approval or a referendum for challenging provisions. The leaders highlighted the overwhelming public support in Ukraine for ending the war, with Trump mentioning a 91% approval rate in favor of peace.

Future negotiations will be carried out by working groups in the upcoming weeks, with Trump indicating direct engagement with Russia. Plans for a potential meeting in Washington involving European leaders were also discussed, with Trump suggesting a timeline based on the outcome of the negotiations. The conflict in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has led to significant civilian displacement and destruction, drawing extensive support from the US and European allies. Previous diplomatic efforts have faced obstacles related to territorial disputes and security guarantees, making the current talks crucial for a potential resolution.
