US President Donald Trump is urging Pakistan to recognize Israel and establish diplomatic relations with it as part of the Iran war settlement. Trump emphasized in a Truth Social post that Pakistan should sign onto the Abraham Accords, a pact where Muslim nations acknowledge Israel. Apart from Pakistan, Trump also called for Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Türkiye, Egypt, and Jordan to acquiesce to the Abraham Accords.
The Abraham Accords, initiated during Trump’s first term, aim to foster diplomatic ties between Muslim nations and Israel. Notably, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have already signed the Accords. The Accord, named after the Jewish Prophet Abraham, is significant for Muslims and Christians alike. Morocco and Sudan are also members, with reports suggesting Kazakhstan and Somaliland might join.
Pakistan’s historical opposition to Israel, rooted in its support for Arab nations during conflicts with Israel, poses a challenge to Trump’s demand. Pakistan, known for its vocal criticism of Israel at international forums, has accused Israel of atrocities against Palestinians. Given Pakistan’s stance as a Muslim nation championing Muslim causes, agreeing to Trump’s request may prove difficult.
Trump’s call for Muslim countries to join the Abraham Accords adds complexity to the Iran conflict resolution. By linking the Accord to the settlement with Iran, Trump seeks to advance diplomatic efforts. The Accord’s inclusion in negotiations could impact the broader geopolitical landscape, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz deal.
