President Donald Trump stated that the United States has taken control of Venezuela following Nicolás Maduro’s arrest. Trump emphasized that the US will manage the country’s recovery before any elections are conducted and cautioned that further US military intervention is possible if Caracas authorities do not cooperate. Speaking from Air Force One, Trump described the risky operation to apprehend Maduro, highlighting that US helicopters faced heavy gunfire during the mission.

Trump acknowledged the dangerous nature of the operation, noting that the helicopters were under attack, with bullets flying around. Despite one helicopter being hit, all US personnel returned safely. Refusing to name a current leader in Venezuela, Trump asserted US dominance by stating, “Don’t ask me who’s in charge; it means we’re in charge.” Trump confirmed that he has not personally communicated with Venezuela’s new leader, Delcy Rodríguez, but mentioned that his administration has been in contact with her.

Regarding the future of Venezuela, Trump emphasized that elections will only occur once the country is stabilized. He described Venezuela as a “dead country” that needs to be revitalized. Trump highlighted the importance of private investment, particularly from US oil companies, in rebuilding Venezuela’s infrastructure. He mentioned the poor state of the country’s infrastructure, emphasizing the eagerness of major companies to invest in Venezuela.

Trump assured that Venezuelans who had to flee to the US would receive proper care. Senator Lindsey Graham, present during the conversation, praised the operation as one of the most sophisticated missions executed by the US military. He likened it to the operation against Osama bin Laden and characterized Venezuela as part of a “drug caliphate” in the US vicinity. Trump mentioned a significant decrease in maritime drug trafficking from Venezuela and outlined plans to enhance enforcement on land routes as well.

In conclusion, Trump dismissed claims that the operation was motivated by oil or regime change, emphasizing that it aimed at promoting peace in the region. He stressed that the operation was about ensuring peace in the hemisphere.
