President Donald Trump’s pick for the next US ambassador to Cambodia, Christopher Anderson, emphasized his commitment to dismantling cyber scam centers in Cambodia during his confirmation hearing. Anderson highlighted the need to strengthen bilateral ties and counter China’s influence in the region. He expressed his focus on combating online scams and criminal networks that have defrauded American citizens of billions of dollars, promising to collaborate with Cambodian counterparts and regional partners to address this issue.
Anderson, currently a national security adviser, praised the improved US-Cambodia relationship and credited President Trump for facilitating a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand. He stressed the importance of sustained engagement with Phnom Penh to prevent overreliance on Beijing and maintain regional stability. Anderson also underscored the significance of platforms like the Mekong-US Partnership for economic and natural resource cooperation in Southeast Asia.
Regarding security cooperation, Anderson highlighted concerns over China’s involvement in the Ream Naval Base’s expansion. He emphasized the need for open dialogue and engagement to address these issues effectively. Anderson suggested that fostering a more predictable investment climate would attract greater American business activity in Cambodia, promoting economic growth and stability in the region.
In response to questions about combating online fraud, Anderson emphasized the necessity of coordinated efforts across various US agencies and regional governments. He outlined the importance of collaboration between the State Department, Department of Justice, and regional allies to combat scam centers effectively. Anderson noted that eliminating these networks would also help reduce human trafficking associated with such criminal operations.
