US President Donald Trump’s move to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians and Syrians has caused a split in the Republican Party. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin supported the decision, emphasizing that TPS was always meant to be temporary. He suggested that beneficiaries explore other legal immigration options or voluntarily return to their home countries.

Mullin mentioned on CNN’s State of the Union that individuals under TPS could apply for permanent residence, a temporary visa, or choose to return home. The administration promised to assist returning migrants with transportation and financial aid, offering a plane ticket and around $2,100 to help them resettle.

The Supreme Court’s recent ruling allowed the Trump administration to end TPS protections for over 350,000 Haitian and Syrian immigrants amid ongoing legal battles. Mullin defended the decision, stating that the US considered various factors before deeming Haiti safe for deportations. He highlighted the importance of citizens returning to rebuild their countries for success.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, however, publicly opposed the administration’s policy, citing security concerns and labor shortages. DeWine expressed disagreement with the decision, emphasizing that deporting Haitians would negatively impact the US economy. He highlighted the significant contributions of Haitian immigrants to various sectors, urging a reconsideration of the policy for the country’s long-term benefit.
