Tunisia has appointed Herve Renard as the head coach until the end of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi after a disappointing start to the tournament. Lamouchi was let go after Tunisia’s 5-1 loss to Sweden in the opening game, making him the first manager in World Cup history to be sacked after just one match.
Renard, a Frenchman with extensive international experience, will take over immediately and lead Tunisia in their upcoming Group F matches against Japan on June 21 and the Netherlands on June 26. The Tunisian Football Federation has stated that discussions for a longer-term contract with Renard will be based on the team’s performance and sporting objectives post the World Cup.
Having previously led Zambia and Cote d’Ivoire to Africa Cup of Nations titles, Renard, 57, is no stranger to success on the international stage. His coaching career also includes managing Morocco and Saudi Arabia, with notable achievements such as Saudi Arabia’s victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Renard most recently coached France’s women’s national team, reaching the 2024 UEFA Women’s Nations League final.
Renard’s appointment comes as Tunisia aims to bounce back from their defeats in the World Cup, having suffered a 5-1 loss to Sweden and a 5-0 defeat to Belgium in a pre-tournament friendly. The French coach’s diverse coaching experience spans various countries and clubs, including stints in France, England, Algeria, and Vietnam.
