Two female leaders of the Trinamool Congress, associated with the party’s strongman Sheikh Shahjahan, have been apprehended in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. The arrests are linked to a violent assault on ED officials in 2024. Among those arrested are Sabita Roy, President of Sandeshkhali-I Panchayat Samiti, and Mithu Sardar, an influential Trinamool leader. The police allege that the two leaders were involved in an attack on ED officers and Central forces personnel using sticks and sharp weapons.
The police have intensified their investigation into the Sandeshkhali case following a change in the state government. Authorities believe there was a significant conspiracy behind the attack. Mithu Sardar, one of the arrested leaders, faces serious allegations of post-poll violence in 2021. Locals claim that Roy and Sardar wielded considerable power in the area under Shahjahan’s protection. The arrested leaders are expected to appear in court in Basirhat, with a request for police custody.
The arrested leaders are also linked to post-poll violence in 2021. Mithu Sardar has a history of allegations involving violence against opposition political workers and vandalism. The police assert that these women were actively involved in various criminal activities, from post-poll violence to the attack on central agencies. The assault on ED officials occurred in front of Shahjahan’s residence in Sandeshkhali, with the police citing a broader pattern of criminal behavior by the arrested leaders.
