Two men were stabbed in separate incidents on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, leading to the arrest of a 51-year-old suspect named Raul Morales by the New York Police Department. The authorities are investigating the motive behind the attacks to determine if they could be classified as hate crimes.
Both victims, an Asian man and a Jewish man, were taken to Mt. Sinai-St. Luke’s Hospital and are expected to recover, according to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch. The NYPD has confirmed that Morales was arrested in connection with both assaults, and there are no other suspects being pursued at this time.
Commissioner Tisch mentioned that during the attacks, Morales reportedly shouted ‘Allahu Akbar,’ prompting the NYPD to consider the possibility of a hate crime. While Morales has no known history of mental health issues with the NYPD, initial investigations suggest that mental health might have played a role in the incidents.
The police have not found any links between Morales and the victims or between the victims themselves. Commissioner Tisch commended a bystander and the responding officers for their quick actions that led to the suspect’s apprehension without further harm. Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed relief that both victims are in stable condition and condemned the attacks as unacceptable in the city.
