Two militants from the NSCN-K (Nikki Sumi) group surrendered in Arunachal Pradesh as part of efforts by the armed forces to promote peace and stability in the region. The insurgents voluntarily laid down their arms before the Assam Rifles and Arunachal Pradesh Police in the Kheti area of Tirap district. Tirap district, bordering Assam, Nagaland, and Myanmar, has a history of insurgent activities.
The surrender is seen as a positive sign of local youth’s growing trust in the security forces and government initiatives to reintegrate misguided youths into society. During the surrender, the militants handed over two pistols and live rounds. They have been taken into custody for legal procedures and rehabilitation.
This surrender highlights the success of ongoing efforts by the Assam Rifles to restore peace and security in the region through outreach and confidence-building measures. Security forces are dedicated to encouraging more youths to abandon violence and embrace peace, development, and nation-building.
The NSCN-K comprises various factions, with the NSCN-K (Nikki Sumi) faction yet to sign a ceasefire agreement with the government. In contrast, other Naga insurgent groups, like the NSCN-IM, have ceasefire agreements and are engaged in peace talks. The National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) and its factions were recently declared an “Unlawful Association” by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
