Two Pakistani nationals have been taken into custody in Italy’s Calabria region on suspicion of killing four migrants, three of whom were confirmed as Afghans, by setting them on fire in Amendolara town. A survivor recounted the harrowing incident, stating that the Pakistani men set their car ablaze with gasoline and fire after they refused to pay. The survivor, an Afghan citizen and the only one to escape the attack, described the horrific ordeal to local media, emphasizing the life-threatening situation he faced.
The survivor revealed that the two arrested individuals, accused of voluntary manslaughter, demanded transportation money from the victims, who declined to comply. Subsequently, the perpetrators threw gasoline and a lighter into the vehicle, resulting in the death of the four migrants. The survivor managed to break a window and flee the burning car, narrowly escaping the tragic fate of his companions. Additionally, he disclosed that the Pakistanis used threats of violence, including knives and guns, to coerce him and others into working without providing payment.
In Amendolara, Cosenza province, the charred bodies of the victims were found inside a minivan parked near a gas station along the Ionian State Road 106 following a reported vehicle fire. The discovery of the bodies prompted a response from firefighters, who arrived at the scene to investigate. The two suspects were apprehended in Villapiana and are currently undergoing interrogation at the Cosenza Police Headquarters, based on information gathered from witness testimonies and surveillance footage.
