Two individuals tragically lost their lives due to inhaling toxic fumes while cleaning a sewage treatment plant tank at a residential complex in Greater Noida. The incident occurred at Eldeco Society in Sector 150 under the jurisdiction of the Knowledge Park police station. The deceased have been identified as sanitation worker Shashikant Sharma and security guard Akash.
The mishap took place during the cleaning of the sewage treatment tank when Shashikant Sharma collapsed after entering the tank, leading to Akash also losing consciousness while trying to rescue him. Upon receiving information about the incident, police and fire department personnel promptly responded, conducting a rescue operation. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, both individuals were declared dead by doctors.
Authorities have initiated an investigation to ascertain the cause of the deaths and to determine if all necessary safety measures were followed during the cleaning process. The contractor responsible for the work has been apprehended, as confirmed by the police in an official statement. The investigation is focusing on whether proper safety equipment, such as protective gear and gas detection devices, was provided to the workers before they entered the confined space.
The recent incident follows a previous tragic event in the same area where a six-year-old boy, Avyaan Surya, lost his life after falling into a water-filled pit. Subsequently, the Greater Noida Authority took action by filing a case against the contractor and two supervisors, terminating their employment. The community expressed outrage over the child’s death, highlighting concerns about safety negligence and advocating for enhanced safety protocols at construction sites.
