At the Pavagadh pilgrimage site in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district, tragedy struck as rocks collapsed onto a stairway early Friday morning, claiming the lives of two pilgrims and injuring several others. The incident, occurring between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. near Patiya Bridge on Pavagadh Hill, was attributed to rocks loosened by heavy rainfall in the area, falling onto the path used by devotees.
Rescue teams, including personnel from the ropeway service and local authorities, swiftly responded to the scene where people were trapped under the debris following the rockfall. Despite the initial chaos and panic, the rescue operation successfully evacuated those affected, with two fatalities and eight injuries reported. The injured were promptly transferred to Halol Referral Hospital for medical care.
Following the tragic event, police personnel from Pavagadh arrived to support the rescue efforts and initiate an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the rock collapse. Despite the ongoing heavy rainfall in the region posing challenges, officials emphasized the importance of caution for visitors and pilgrims, especially in hilly areas during the monsoon season.
