West Bengal government officials announced the suspension of two policemen in South 24 Parganas district for allegedly assaulting a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate. The suspended officers, Inspector-In-Charge Samar Dey and Sub-Inspector Sukumar Ruidas, are from Baruipur police station. The incident involving the assault on BJP candidate Biswajit Pal occurred on May 5, a day after the state’s Assembly election results were declared.
In a video that circulated on social media, Inspector-In-Charge Samar Dey and other policemen were seen physically assaulting the BJP candidate and escorting him to a vehicle. The BJP candidate claimed that the police attacked him without cause while he was on the road. Following a complaint filed by Biswajit Pal, an investigation was initiated by the state police, leading to the suspension of both the Inspector-In-Charge and the Sub-Inspector of Baruipur police station.
The disciplinary action against the policemen was taken after the BJP formed the new government in West Bengal post the Assembly election victory. The BJP, led by Suvendu Adhikari, emerged victorious, ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress government in the state. Suvendu Adhikari has assumed office as the Chief Minister and recently conducted his first Cabinet meeting at the State Secretariat Nabanna, followed by a meeting with top police officials.
