Kolkata Police reported the arrest of two Thai nationals in the city for smuggling banned narcotics. Disguised as tourists, the women were found with ecstasy, also known as ‘Molly’, in tablet and granule forms. Identified as Supawadi Sukuliyat and Suthuwana Kut, the duo flew from Bangkok to Kolkata with the illegal drugs.
The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police apprehended the women in the Bhowanipore area of south Kolkata. The seized drug, MDMA, is valued at over Rs 1 lakh. Authorities revealed that the suspects had planned to distribute the drugs in the city, where there is a growing demand for such substances among young partygoers.
Intelligence sources indicated a trend of drug smuggling from Bangkok to Kolkata, with traffickers using various means to transport substances like Ecstasy, Molly, LSD, and Cocaine. The arrested women initially claimed expertise in evading airport security checks. Investigators are probing whether they have previously trafficked drugs into Kolkata or other Indian cities.
The detectives are also looking into the local connections facilitating the women’s activities in the city. Interrogations are ongoing to uncover the extent of their network and potential accomplices in Kolkata’s drug trade.
