The Congress-led UDF is contemplating a no-confidence motion against the BJP administration in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. This move could create political uncertainty in the state’s only BJP-led civic body if the CPI-M-led LDF decides to offer support. The Corporation Council is set to convene on Monday to strategize following recent violent incidents within the civic body.
The turmoil arises less than a year after the BJP gained control of the Corporation in the 2025 local body elections, ending over four decades of CPI-M rule. This marked the first time the BJP governed a municipal corporation in Kerala. The recent clash within the Corporation, resulting in injuries to several councillors, including Mayor V.V. Rajesh, stemmed from the LDF’s demand for the removal of BJP councillor R. Sugathan.
Both the LDF and UDF are pushing for Sugathan’s disqualification as a councillor. Sugathan, currently detained under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, plans to seek permission from the Kerala High Court to retake his oath. The BJP has accused the LDF and UDF of colluding to destabilize the Corporation, while the state government is seeking legal advice on the matter.
