Amid rising security concerns in the Black Sea region, Ukraine has called for global action to pressure Russia into halting its assaults on civilian ships. The Ukraine Embassy in India stated that Russia’s actions in the Black Sea have led to casualties among seafarers and crew members of merchant vessels. The Embassy emphasized the need for a swift response to security warnings to mitigate threats to civilian navigation.

The Embassy of Ukraine in India has consistently alerted international partners, including senior Indian officials, about the dangers posed by Russia’s activities in the Black Sea. In response to the security situation, Indian authorities have issued advisories for Indian ships and foreign-flagged vessels with Indian seafarers in the Black Sea. Timely and preventive measures are deemed crucial for safeguarding seafarers and enhancing maritime security.

Expressing condolences to the families of Indian seafarers affected by the deteriorating security conditions in the Black Sea, the Embassy hopes for discussions between the Foreign Ministers of India and Ukraine on the region’s security. The Embassy stressed the necessity of increasing global pressure on Russia to cease its attacks on civilian shipping for sustainable maritime security.

The Ministry of External Affairs in India recently advised Indian nationals considering employment on commercial vessels in the Black Sea region to carefully evaluate security risks. Noting the volatile security environment due to ongoing conflicts, the MEA highlighted significant security threats faced by commercial vessels, including missile and drone attacks. Since April 2026, there have been incidents resulting in the tragic loss of 5 Indian lives.

To ensure safety, the MEA urged individuals to gather comprehensive information from employers regarding routes, security measures, and emergency procedures. It emphasized compliance with international maritime standards, provision for medical care, evacuation, and repatriation, and maintaining communication with family. Indian nationals requiring consular assistance were advised to contact the Indian Embassy for support.
