United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over the escalating situation in West Asia, calling on all parties to halt attacks and show maximum restraint to prevent further tensions. Guterres emphasized the importance of abiding by ceasefires in Lebanon, Iran, and Gaza while avoiding actions that could hinder diplomatic efforts.
Guterres also criticized Israel’s decision to close crossings into Gaza, urging for their immediate reopening to ensure the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid. He stressed the need to respect navigational rights and freedoms in accordance with international law and urged all parties to protect civilians by upholding their obligations under international law.
Highlighting the futility of military solutions in the Middle East conflicts, Guterres emphasized the necessity of dialogue and negotiations for sustainable peace. He called on all concerned parties to prioritize diplomatic solutions that promote regional and international peace and security.
Amid ongoing tensions in West Asia, recent exchanges between Iran and Israel have heightened concerns. The Israel Defence Forces reported striking targets in Iran’s Mahshahr area, prompting retaliatory actions from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeting Israeli air bases. The situation remains tense, with both sides issuing warnings and threats of further action.
