In his message marking the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Guterres stated that illicit drug trafficking has far-reaching negative impacts on individuals and communities worldwide. He pointed out that this criminal activity fuels violence, crime, and instability, emphasizing that it is not a victimless crime. The UN chief expressed concern over the rise of synthetic drugs and online trafficking networks, exacerbating the drug crisis.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) released its World Drug Report 2026, revealing that drug traffickers are leveraging technology and global instability to introduce new drugs and expand their markets. The report highlighted the proliferation of potent and dangerous drugs, leading to millions of premature deaths and significant societal harm. UNODC Executive Director Monica Juma emphasized the urgent need for innovative solutions to address the drug trafficking menace.
