UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed support for a three-day ceasefire and a planned exchange of prisoners between Ukraine and Russia. Guterres emphasized the need for an immediate, full, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire to pave the way for a just and sustainable peace, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a ceasefire lasting from Saturday to Monday, along with a reciprocal exchange of prisoners, as reported by Xinhua news agency. US President Donald Trump also confirmed the ceasefire, viewing it as a potential step towards resolving the long-standing conflict.
Trump announced the three-day ceasefire, coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, and acknowledged Ukraine’s significant role in World War II. He highlighted that the agreement includes a cessation of active combat operations and a substantial exchange of prisoners between the two countries.
The US President took direct credit for initiating the ceasefire, expressing gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for their cooperation in agreeing to the terms.
