The UN General Assembly recently engaged in its fifth interactive dialogue with a nominee for the upcoming UN secretary-general position. Maria Fernanda Espinosa, a former UNGA president and ex-official of Ecuador, put forth her vision statement during the session. She addressed queries from UN member states and civil society representatives, focusing on her leadership qualities, experience, UN reform, and the organization’s core pillars.
Espinosa emphasized the need for tangible outcomes rather than mere reaffirmation of multilateral principles in her vision statement. She stressed the importance of a proactive United Nations that can prevent crises, respond effectively, and enhance confidence in collective efforts. Her vision revolves around five key areas of transformation, including peace and security, development, digital and energy advancements, bridging delivery gaps, and enhancing credibility.
The candidate clarified that her vision is not an exhaustive action plan but rather a roadmap for the Secretary-General to act decisively within her mandate. Espinosa highlighted the critical role of Member States in providing comprehensive political and financial leadership for restoring the UN’s credibility and effectiveness.
During late April, the UNGA conducted a comprehensive two-day interactive dialogue involving four other candidates vying for the UN’s top position. These candidates include Michelle Bachelet, Rafael Grossi, Macky Sall, and Rebeca Grynspan, each nominated by different countries for the esteemed role. The current UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, is set to conclude his term by the end of this year, with the new appointee expected to assume office on January 1, 2027.
