A United Nations peacekeeper lost his life on Thursday in southeastern Lebanon when mortar shells hit his position near Marjayoun, as confirmed by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Two other peacekeepers were injured in the incident and are currently receiving medical treatment. Following the tragic event, the critically wounded peacekeeper was airlifted to a hospital in Beirut, where he later passed away.
UNIFIL has initiated an investigation to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the incident. The UN force has urged all parties to adhere to international law, ensuring the safety and protection of UN personnel and property at all times. Deliberate attacks on peacekeepers are considered serious breaches of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701, potentially constituting war crimes.
Antonio Tajani, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, disclosed that the deceased peacekeeper was a Serbian soldier, while the two injured individuals are from Spain and El Salvador. Tajani extended his heartfelt condolences to the UNIFIL troops, the government of Serbia, and the affected peacekeepers. Emphasizing the dedication and professionalism of UNIFIL personnel in maintaining peace and assisting local communities in conflict-affected areas, Tajani stressed the importance of ensuring their safety and security.
