The UN Security Council is set to convene an emergency meeting on Monday regarding the recent US operation in Venezuela. The meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m., comes in response to the US capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in Caracas. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the US action, labeling it a “dangerous precedent.”
Guterres’s spokesperson highlighted the Secretary-General’s alarm at the military operation in Venezuela, emphasizing its potential implications for the region. The UN Secretary-General stressed the importance of upholding international law, including the UN Charter, and called for inclusive dialogue and respect for human rights and the rule of law in Venezuela.
In an early morning operation, US Delta forces carried out an attack on an army base in Venezuela, leading to the apprehension of President Maduro and his wife. The captured individuals were then transported to New York to face “narco-terrorism” charges in a federal court, as confirmed by US officials.
