Uniform Civil Code Bill Sparks Clash Between BJP and Congress in Madhya Pradesh Assembly

The passage of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly has led to a contentious standoff between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress. State BJP president Hemant Khandelwal praised the Bill as a significant move, commending Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s government for enacting the UCC in the state. Khandelwal highlighted that the legislation aims to enhance social justice, equality, and constitutional principles, ensuring women’s rights and security.

The BJP’s stance on the UCC was met with strong opposition from the Congress, which criticized the government for allegedly using the Bill to promote the ideological agenda of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and divert attention from critical issues. Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar accused the BJP of neglecting pressing matters like farmers’ distress, unemployment, crimes against women, education, and healthcare, while focusing on the UCC. Singhar led a symbolic protest by Congress MLAs, denouncing the government’s priorities.

The UCC Bill dominated discussions during the Madhya Pradesh Assembly’s Monsoon Session, leading to heated debates and exchanges between the ruling and opposition parties. The legislation, which includes provisions for mandatory registration of live-in relationships and penalties for violations, aims to establish a uniform legal framework for all citizens. Despite the BJP’s claims of promoting social harmony and gender equality, the Congress remains critical of the government’s motives and priorities.
